The Box Office Steeple Chase

The new Apatow comedy apparently isn't going to set the turnstiles ablaze:

Moviegoers puzzled whether Universal's Funny People was a comedy or dramedy (more the latter) as Adam Sandler continued his cold streak playing serious and Judd Apatow stretched beyond his usual raunchy laffers ...

So Funny People earns $8 million of a Friday to come in a tepid #1 ...

Down the hall at the multiplex, G-Force collected $6 million (down -47%), while Harry Potter (#3) scored $4.7 million for a $252 million domestic accumulation ....

Add On: On the animated front, Ice Age 3 earns $1.7 million for a domestic total of 178,258,000 ... which could place it in Monsters Vs. Aliens territory in the U.S., but of course it's going to make waay more in all other parts of the world.

And Up is now down at #15, near the end of its domestic run, and earning $350,000 on Friday ... for a grand total of $285,229,000 on the domestic front.

Add On Too: Overall box office is down from a year ago, with Funny People, Harry Poterr, G-Force and The Ugly Truth filling the one through four slots. As stated above, animated features or animation-live action hybrids (are they bred in test tubes?) took five out of ten places in this week's derby.
