Crayon Dragon

As we were saying, Cal Arts' animation department isn't a male* bastion the way it used to be. For instance:

Toniko Pantoja created the short directly above as her his second-year project. As Toniko says:

"A girl is commissioned to paint over an old concrete illustration, in which to her surprise, sinks into. She befriends a painted dragon who has a wing missing."

(Find Toniko's blog here.)

* Ha. Toniko Pantoja is male, now that I dig more deeply. My mistake, for which apologies.

Toniko is a guy. Not so cool, Animation Guild. Not so cool.

My mistake entirely, now corrected.

Well, at least he won't have to worry about being fired off a movie he wrote and directed.

Funny, since the banishing of the anonymous post'r this post is really the only one that has generated more than a mild response - and that was only because Steve messed up on the gender of the artist in question. If drying up conversation was the point of taking away the anon post ability then "Bravo" good-sir, mission accomplished!

There are plenty of young women animators at Cal Arts . Check out the Cal Arts Vimeo channel:

This one by Mallory Dyer:

and this one by Tahnee Gehm:

are just a few examples of films made by talented young women at Cal Arts.

Drying up the dickishness was the point of removing the anonymous button.

Worked like a charm.

Indeed, it only takes the highly motivated trolls like Sir Fortagsnarking above to throw out some "Dickishness" now. I have to say its a much nicer blog now.

You tried Steve, Not having looked further, I would've probably made the same mistake too.

Hey, I made a mistake about gender. It happens.

I cried myself to sleep about it a couple of nights, and now I'm over it.

Yeah, some people love turning animation studios into convents as well...I have to disagree on this one. Part of my enjoyment was the discussion, regardless of the prickishness, it used to be fun...

some people don't like freedom...

Others don't like rudeness.

But everyone is welcome, as long as they walk in with a handle.

Of course, if that's too threatening, I guess they can stay away ...
